How to Set Bullion Goals by Weight

A goal in grams or ounces is easier to hold than one in money, because it does not move with the price. Here is how to set one and measure progress.

Short answer: set a target weight for each metal, such as 100 troy ounces of silver, choose a date or a monthly amount, and track progress in weight. A weight target stays meaningful as prices move, while a money target shifts every day.

Why weight beats money

If your goal is a sum of money, the metal you need changes with the price. A goal in grams or ounces tells you how much metal you actually own, whatever its price.

How to choose a target

  • Decide a target weight for each metal.
  • Work out how much you would need to add each month to reach it.
  • Choose a split between metals that matches your plan.

The allocation guide covers how to think about the split.

Measure progress

Compare your current weight with the target, and look at your average cost to see how the purchases have gone. Review it monthly rather than daily.

Adjust when life changes

A goal is a plan, not a promise. Move the target or the date when your situation changes, and write down why.

Let the app track it

BullionKeeper lets you set a target weight for each metal and shows your progress. See the features for goals and price alerts.
