Like its silver counterpart, the Gold Eagle went through a mid-year design transition in 2021: the original "Family of Eagles" reverse, used since 1986, was retired partway through the year for a new eagle-portrait design, across all four denominations. This makes 2021 the one year in the Gold Eagle's run where the date alone doesn't tell you which design you're holding — the actual reverse artwork does.
As with the 2021 Silver Eagle, confirm Type 1 or Type 2 from the listing before buying, especially if you're trying to complete a specific design-era set rather than just wanting a 2021-dated coin. Neither type carries a significant premium over the other for common sizes.
Log the year, your cost basis, and photos — and see it valued at today's spot price alongside the rest of your collection.
Start tracking freeYes — both underwent a mid-2021 reverse redesign as part of the same U.S. Mint program, splitting that year's production into Type 1 and Type 2 coins across both series.
Not meaningfully for common sizes — both are widely available. The interest is in owning both types to represent the transition, not in one being scarce.
