History & design

The Royal Canadian Mint launched the Wildlife Series in 2011 with the Gray Wolf and Grizzly Bear, the first two of what became a six-coin finite set released two designs per year through 2013 — the Cougar and Moose followed in 2012, then the Pronghorn Antelope and Wood Bison closed out the series in 2013. Each 1 oz .9999 fine silver design was capped at a mintage of 1 million, and the artwork came from two different illustrators: Pierre Leduc designed the 2011 and 2012 releases, while Emily Damstra — who later designed the Predator Series' Cougar and the current American Silver Eagle reverse — took over for the 2013 finale.

How to start collecting the Wildlife Series

This is a larger finite series than the Predator Series or Birds of Prey (six designs rather than four), but still a bounded, achievable completion goal unlike an open-ended date run. A new buyer should decide whether they're drawn to the specific animals, the two-illustrator design history, or simply want a complete, finished themed set — all reasonable starting points for a series this size.

Key dates at a glance

The dates serious Wildlife Series collectors specifically chase — the rest of the run trades close to melt value.
