Track gold and silver in AUD

Short answer: metal is priced in US dollars per troy ounce. To see it in the Australian dollar (AUD), multiply by the exchange rate; to see it per gram, divide the ounce price by 31.1035. BullionKeeper does both for every holding.

How it works in Australia

Australian buyers usually quote troy ounces, and local mint products are common, so premiums and the exchange rate both matter.

A worked example

Spot: 2,000 US dollars per troy ounce (round number)

Illustrative rate: 1 USD = 1.5 AUD

Price per ounce: 2,000 × 1.5 = 3,000.00 AUD

Price per gram: 3,000.00 ÷ 31.1035 = 96.45 AUD

For other prices, use the price per gram calculator.

Why the exchange rate matters to your gain

If you pay in AUD, your value moves with both the metal price and the exchange rate. A flat metal price can still change your AUD value if the currency moves, so record what you paid in AUD and track your gain in the same currency. See how exchange rates affect bullion purchases.
