Track gold and silver in CAD

Short answer: metal is priced in US dollars per troy ounce. To see it in the Canadian dollar (CAD), multiply by the exchange rate; to see it per gram, divide the ounce price by 31.1035. BullionKeeper does both for every holding.

How it works in Canada

Canadian buyers mostly think in troy ounces, and the exchange rate with the US dollar moves the local price even when spot is flat.

A worked example

Spot: 2,000 US dollars per troy ounce (round number)

Illustrative rate: 1 USD = 1.35 CAD

Price per ounce: 2,000 × 1.35 = 2,700.00 CAD

Price per gram: 2,700.00 ÷ 31.1035 = 86.81 CAD

For other prices, use the price per gram calculator.

Why the exchange rate matters to your gain

If you pay in CAD, your value moves with both the metal price and the exchange rate. A flat metal price can still change your CAD value if the currency moves, so record what you paid in CAD and track your gain in the same currency. See how exchange rates affect bullion purchases.

Questions

Why does the Canadian price change when US spot does not?+

Because the local price is the US dollar spot multiplied by the exchange rate, so a move in the currency changes it.

Can BullionKeeper show my holdings in CAD?+

Yes. Spot prices are available in more than 50 currencies including the Canadian dollar, so your portfolio value, cost and gain can be shown in CAD.

Are the example numbers real prices?+

No. They use a round price of 2,000 US dollars per ounce and an illustrative exchange rate, to show the arithmetic only.
