Track gold and silver in GBP

Short answer: metal is priced in US dollars per troy ounce. To see it in the pound sterling (GBP), multiply by the exchange rate; to see it per gram, divide the ounce price by 31.1035. BullionKeeper does both for every holding.

How it works in the United Kingdom

UK buyers usually see prices per troy ounce or per gram in pounds, and many coins are priced individually.

A worked example

Spot: 2,000 US dollars per troy ounce (round number)

Illustrative rate: 1 USD = 0.8 GBP

Price per ounce: 2,000 × 0.8 = 1,600.00 GBP

Price per gram: 1,600.00 ÷ 31.1035 = 51.44 GBP

For other prices, use the price per gram calculator.

Why the exchange rate matters to your gain

If you pay in GBP, your value moves with both the metal price and the exchange rate. A flat metal price can still change your GBP value if the currency moves, so record what you paid in GBP and track your gain in the same currency. See how exchange rates affect bullion purchases.
