What is reeded edge?

Short answer: A reeded edge is a coin's rim marked with fine parallel grooves.

Reeding began as a way to deter shaving of precious metal from coin edges. Many bullion coins still have reeded edges, and a missing or uneven reeding can be a warning sign on a suspect coin.
