What is third-party grading?

Short answer: Third-party grading is an independent service that authenticates a coin and assigns a condition grade, then seals it in a tamper-evident holder.

It matters most for numismatic coins, where condition drives price. It adds a fee, so it is rarely worth it for ordinary bullion coins.
