How to Calculate the Gold Price Per Gram

Gold is quoted per troy ounce, but many buyers think in grams. Here is the one-line conversion, with a worked example and what the result does and does not tell you.

Short answer: divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1035. If gold is quoted at 2,000 per troy ounce, the price per gram is 2,000 divided by 31.1035, which is about 64.30. The result is the value of the pure metal only, not what a retail buyer pays.

The conversion

One troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams. So the price per gram is the price per ounce divided by 31.1035. To go the other way, multiply a price per gram by 31.1035.

A worked example

  • Price per troy ounce: 2,000
  • Price per gram: 2,000 ÷ 31.1035 ≈ 64.30
  • Value of a 10 g piece of pure gold: 10 × 64.30 ≈ 643

You can check any figure with the gold price per gram calculator, which also shows the price per kilogram and per tola.

Adjust for purity

The result applies to pure gold. For an 18 karat piece, multiply by 0.75, and for 22 karat by 0.916. The gold karat converter shows the share of gold for any karat.

What it does not include

The metal value is not a retail price. Coins and bars sell at a premium over spot, and buyers pay below spot for items they must refine. Use the per-gram figure as a baseline to compare offers, not as a price you will be quoted.

Why grams are useful

Tracking your holdings in grams lets you compare purchases of different sizes on one scale, using your cost per gram. It is also the unit most scales read, which keeps your records and your measurements in step.
