Gold karat converter

Short answer: Divide the karat by 24 to get the share of gold. 18K is 18 divided by 24, or 75% gold, which is stamped 750. 24K is pure gold, and 14K is 58.5% gold, stamped 585.

Stamps use rounded fineness: 22K is stamped 916, 18K is 750, 14K is 585 and 10K is 417.

How to use it

  1. Find the karat on the item, often stamped as 18K, 18kt or a fineness number such as 750.
  2. Enter the karat (a fineness stamp divided by 1000 times 24 gives the karat).
  3. Read the percent of gold, the fineness and the share of other metals.
  4. Use the purity in the gold melt value calculator to price the metal.

Formula: gold content = karat ÷ 24, and fineness = gold content × 1000

Questions

What is the difference between karat and carat?+

Karat (K) measures the purity of gold in 24ths. Carat (ct) is a unit of weight for gemstones, equal to 0.2 grams. They are spelled alike in some countries but measure different things.

Why is 24K stamped 999 and not 1000?+

No refined gold is perfectly pure, so pure gold is described as 999 or 999.9 fine. 24K is the name for gold at that level.

Is higher karat always better?+

Higher karat means more gold and a higher metal value, but the gold is softer. Lower karat alloys are harder and more durable for jewelry.

What does 750 on a ring mean?+

A 750 stamp means the item is 75% gold by weight, which is 18 karat.
