Silver melt value calculator
Short answer: Multiply the item's weight by its purity to get the pure silver, convert that to troy ounces, and multiply by the silver spot price. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, coin silver is 90%, and fine silver is 99.9%.
How to use it
- Enter the total weight and choose the unit. Weigh the item without any non-silver parts, such as felt or wood bases.
- Choose the purity: fine silver 0.999, Britannia 0.958, sterling 0.925, coin silver 0.900 or 0.800.
- Enter today's silver spot price per troy ounce in your currency.

How much pure silver is in sterling?+
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver by weight, marked 925. A 100 g sterling item contains 92.5 g of pure silver.
What purity is a silver bullion bar or coin?+
Most modern silver bullion coins and bars are 0.999 fine, and some mints strike 0.9999. Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half dollars are 90% silver.
Is melt value the same as what a dealer pays?+
No. Dealers pay a little under melt to cover their costs, and sometimes pay a premium for popular coins. Know the melt value first, then compare offers.
Why does the tool ask for troy ounces?+
Silver spot prices are quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 g). The tool converts your weight into troy ounces before applying the price.
